Janet Pozmantier
Associate Director of Programs
Janet Pozmantier is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), and Registered Play Therapist (RPT). She has worked as a play therapist with emotionally disturbed preschool children, specializing in treating victims of physical and sexual abuse. As the Director of the WHO (We Help Ourselves) Program for the Mental Health Association (MHA) of Houston and Harris County, Janet trained volunteers to teach over 300,000 children how to avoid becoming victims of physical and sexual abuse. During her 8 years with MHA, Janet designed the preschool component of the WHO program, created and administered a video-based adult in-service on the issues of abuse (Grown Ups and Downs), and presented at local, state, and national conferences.
In 1991, Janet created a program designed to teach parenting skills to children, known as Parents Under Construction: Building Healthy Relationships Today and Strong Families Tomorrow. For the past sixteen years, she has worked for ChildBuilders, expanding the Parents Under Construction curriculum and training over 3,000 instructors throughout Texas and the United States in program implementation. Parents Under Construction has been found effective in sixteen research evaluations and has received six awards.
As a child advocate, Janet is a founding member of the Child Abuse Prevention Network (now known as Healthy Families Initiatives) and Children at Risk. She is an Advisory Board member of The Parenting Project (a national clearinghouse and advocacy center for children’s parenting programs), and has presented Parents Under Construction at local, state, and national conferences, specializing in “hands-on”, interactive presentations. Janet is a co-author of The First Years (DK Publishing, 2001), and in 2003, received the Unsung Hero for Houston’s Children Award from Children at Risk. In 2004, she was named the Houston Area Association for the Education of Young Children and Texas Association for the Education of Young Children Trainer of the Year. |
